My 2012 Bucket List

Posted on 16. Dec, 2011 by in Blog, Europe Travel

Even though 2011 was a big year for me in terms of travel and life changes, 2012 doesn’t seem like it’s going to be any slower. And I am so excited about that! I have been building up a bucket list for quite a while now and despite the fact that I keep crossing items off of it, others just keep adding themselves. I went up the Mont-Blanc. I discovered my ancestor’s village. I went on a few roadtrips… but I am still so thirsty for discovery! Let’s see what tickled my fancy for my 2012 bucket list.

Visit Sweden: I have recently became quite obsessed with Sweden. The cities of Stockholm, Malmö and Göteburg appeal to me like few places do and I honestly can’t wait to start planning my visit. Experiencing fika, breathing the crisp air, eating fresh salmon, admiring the outstanding design and maybe even seeing the Northern Lights would be a dream come true. Needless to say that this is the most important item on my 2012 bucket list!

Bike through Holland: this particular one has been in the back of my head for a while now, but somehow I never got myself to actually do it. With more than 6000 kilometers of trails, there’s so much to be seen (including some Holiday Inn meetings)! Ideally I’d love to start in Rotterdam and bike all the way to quirky Gieethorn, including stops in Haag, Gouda and Utrecht. I really want to go in April in order to enjoy the surreal tulips fields!

Roadtrip in Normandy: I’ve explored many parts of France, but Normandy is not one of them. With sights like the D-Day beaches, Mont St-Michel, cliffs of Etretat, Marais Vernier and the Monet gardens in Giverny… it’s hard to resist. I’ll have to add some mileage to my trusty Focus and enjoy the ride!

Experience housesitting: after reading Dalene and Peter’s guide to housesitting, I was hooked. This is an amazing concept, and quite self-explanatory. People go on vacation and you get to babysit their house while they are gone. And that includes taking care of the bills, of the pets, and general upkeeping of the house. I would love to try this out in a remote English village!

Mediterranean cruise

Go on a Mediterrannean cruise: Greece! Turkey! Amalfi Coast! Venice! Hard to resist, eh? I have never been on a cruise before and I am dying to try out the concept, and see for myself if the median age really is 55+. I like the idea of sampling each destination on a daytrip and getting back on the boat at night to enjoy the entertainment. Watching beautiful sunsets over the Mediterrannean from my balcony? Yes please.

Have you been on any of these trips? Do you have recommendations, or do you have a 2012 bucket list yourself?

Ooh - after doing a little bit of biking in the Netherlands, we want to go back and do it all too!

Thanks for the shout out on housesitting. We are currently near Malaga, Spain for a housesit over the holidays and are loving every minute of it! It really is the best way to travel.

I would so love to do the biking trip inHolland (during April!!!!) too… i’ve fantacized about it for a good while now!aditionally, I’m becoming somewhat obsessed with Wales. and South West England. And hope to be a good enough climber by summer to gosomewhere in Peak District (or Lake District!). But these are all things for when it starts to get a bit warmer…. For the beginning of 2012, I hope to be able to go on a proper ski trip some time (toget outof this ridiculous beginners level before I am too old for it)… Loads of plans, hehe

I like your bike through Holland item, that’s something I’d like to do as well. I’ve also heard that northern Germany and southern Denmark is beautiful to bike through (although, first I need to learn to ride a bicycle… maybe that should be one of my 2012 bucket list items!)

Thanks for this bicycle reminder ;)

You’re the first person that I know of who doesn’t know how to ride a bicycle, how cute! Then again, I don’t even have a licence.
