My 2013 Bucket List

Posted on 28. Dec, 2012 by in Blog

2012 was, as you know, a very busy year. I’ve been all around Europe, made great new friends and ate my weight in chocolate - and while I’m thankful for all these opportunities, I’m very much looking forward staying put in 2013, writing about the places I’ve seen, and setting my career forward to the next level.

Here goes my 2013 bucket list.

Northern Lights

This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and I’m - collective GASP!!! - ashamed to say that as a Canadian, I’ve never seen the Northern Lights. Ever. And I must fix this! According to scientists (or whoever predicts this kind of thing), 2013 is supposed to be an exceptional year in terms of aurora activity, and I figure that’s just the excuse I needed to plan a trip to the Arctic Circle and witness one of the world’s most magical displays.

So the question is - Norway, Sweden or Iceland?

It seems like everyone has been talking about this small, Adriatic country in the past couple of years - and I want to join the party too. I want to learn how to pronounce Ljubljana, I want to try and see Lake Bled fog-free, I want to experience this Austrian-Italian melting pot and I want to see those gorgeous Slovenian Alps. Take me there right now!

Another a party to which I haven’t been: Iceland. Flights from France are surprisingly inexpensive, and considering just how puzzled I was by the extended daylight in Edinburgh mid-June, I want to experience the full-on midnight sun, see some of planet’s best Lunar landscape (har de har) and pet those cute Icelandic horses everyone is talking about.

Also, my taste bud require a stop at Reykjavik’s famous hotdog stand, although they warned me against puffin and whale. I won’t argue!

I’ve had the chance to go to Morocco this year, my first culture shocking country, and it only opened my curious mind even more. I want to see the Black Sea, get lost in the Istanbul markets, eat my weight in baklavas, see the wonderful Mosques and shop ’til I drop. And this is also a destination my husband is interested in, so perhaps we’ll even get the chance to go together!

And I also have a few personal things I want to accomplish in 2013…

Write for the Huffington Post

Life of a blogger…

This is probably an irrational thought of mine, but I feel like writing for the Huffington Post, if only once, is a great pat in the back in terms of success. Some of my favorites bloggers have written articles for their regional Posts, and I can’t help but wish I could do the same. And for the first time, I feel like I’ve gained enough experience and recognition in the past two years that I feel confident in pitching a few ideas. Stay tuned!

Become a self-sufficient freelancer

And in the same line of thought, I really want to focus on my career next year. And by that, I don’t mean that I’m dumping you guys. Far from it!

I want to stay home more, write more, work more, and get my name out there so I can finally make a decent living (and perhaps even get this business class flight I’ve always dreamed about…). The reason I was able to travel so much last year is because most of my travels were press trips, and therefore didn’t hurt my bank account too much. It’s a good thing, because in all honesty, very little money came out of that account for the simple reason that very little came in! So my catchphrase for next year is: SHOW ME THE MONEY!

Be a better wife

2013 Bucket List

How am I supposed to leave him again?

This is especially close to my heart - obviously. I’ve spent so much time on the road in 2012, I couldn’t help but feel a tang of guilt every time I saw a new amazing place. I thought about my husband who was stuck at work, coming home to an empty apartment. I missed him immensely, and I intend to make up for that next year, by being at home more often, by making more efforts to schedule my travels during in vacation time, and also to cook him healthy meals. Because let’s be honest here - leave a man alone for two weeks and all you’ll find in the fridge is yogurt and beer!

That’s about it for 2013. Mind you, I have an ongoing bucket list of things I want to do - but these destinations are places that tickled my fancy more than others for the time being. Who knows what my 2013 wrap-up post will be like? So much to look forward to!

What are your key destinations for 2013? What are you looking forward to reading about the most? Any suggestions?

What a great list of goals and destinations! Hope they all happen for you! I would love to read about all of them, especially your time in Turkey. Iceland, Norway and Ireland are at the top of my list for 2013, and Turkey, Croatia and Jordan are right up there too.

    Hi Marie,

I’m Canadian and I’ve never seen the Northern Lights either. Probably because this country is so dam big and it’s expensive to travel up north.

Regarding Slovenia, I can highly recommend it. It’s about the size of Eastern Ontario LOL!

We were there in 2010. Pics are here:

    All the best for 2013!

We are planning another Alpine hiking trip.

Aurora Borealis is on our list too - I’m not sure where the best place is to go and watch it…Norway will obviously be cheaper and more convenient for us but I think there are better places…
