A Wax Figures and Peacocks Day at Warwick Castle

When Grayline invited me on their Oxford, Stratford and Warwick tour, I knew I was in for a treat. I was especially looking forward to Warwick Castle, who has the reputation of being one of the best castles in the UK. I couldn’t wait to find out if it was true!

Warwick Castle

The first part of the visit is the Kingmaker exhibition, where you learn more about the history of  Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, as he prepares his household for the 1471 Battle of Barnet. Before I entered the castle, I learned that most rooms had wax figures reenacting the events of the pre-battle - that made me a little suspicious, as I am not a fan of neither wax figures or reenactments. But I quickly changed my mind when I realized how life-like the figures were. Not sure what I was expecting considering that none else than Madame Tussaud provided them - I almost expected them to start moving!

The castle’s visit is very well organized and even allows the visitor to get a little creative. Once you have visited the Kingmaker exhibition, you are free to either climb up Guy’s Tower, visit the state rooms, wander around the castle grounds or go up the mound.

My first stop was the state rooms. Again with the amazing wax figures, but in a whole other era. This time the setting is late 1800s, and it has nothing to do with a medieval battle! The decor was very feminine and quaint, fit for duchesses and countesses.

And then I ventured out to the mound, which gave spectacular views over the castle grounds, with typical UK weather - dark gray clouds one minute, and dramatic sunset the other. Go figure. I’m a bit sad I didn’t get the time to climb up Guy’s Tower and admire the scenery of Warwick village and a huge chunk of Warwickshire, but it was a very nice visit nonetheless.

The absolute best part of the visit, however, was the Peacocks Garden.

I was a bit tired at that point and kind of dragged myself all the way over there, but my energy quickly spiked up when I noticed the actual quantity of peacocks. There were about 15 of them. Walking around, chilling, court-shipping. Yup. You read that right! There were about 5 of them aligned, dancing their little ass off, courting the ladies. It was awesome! I wonder if any of them got lucky… (sorry about the French bit in the video. My brain was both too tired and excited to switch to English).

Have you been to Warwick Castle? What’s your favorite UK castle? Do you like organised daytrips?

Oh, we so much loved Warwick and its wax figurines! One of the best castles in UK indeed, if not THE best.
