Alternative Shopping in East Berlin

Picture this: indie record shops, up and coming designers, eco-friendly labels, quirky trinkets and vintage treasures.  Worlds away from the high street brands and generic items, East Berlin – and Prenzlauer Berg in particular – will fulfil the needs of even the most hip shopper.

Shopping in East Berlin

The once battered and disregarded part of the capital morphed into what is now one of the trendiest places to be in all of Europe, which would even make icons like New York’s Brooklyn or Stockholm’s Södermalm green with envy. Looking for the perfect gift, or a fashionable new addition to your wardrobe? Grab your German Rail Pass, head to Berlin, and have a look at these judiciously handpicked addresses, spread all over the neighbourhood.

Oddities and gifts

  • Fancy Nancy (Pappelalle 7) – funky accessories, from handbags to jewellery to iPhone cases.
  • CakeVille (Wörtherstrasse 23) – everything you need to bake and decorate the cutest of cakes.
  • 03-Berlin (Oderbergerstrasse 3) – the ideal gift shop, with quirky birthday cards, home décor and fashion accessories.
  • VOPO Records (Danzinger Strasse 31) – indie record shop with an attitude. For serious music lovers only!

  • Parapluie Mode (Oderbergerstrasse 5) – Modern fashion designer for woman.
  • Mr and Mrs Peppers (Kastanienallee 91) – Fashion designer with a flair for a 1960s vibe.
  • Zartbitter (Kastanienallee 1) – A small shop that offers a wide variety of brands at reasonable prices.
  • Heimat Berlin (Kastanienallee 13) – The funkiest hat-shop around.
  • Heimzucht (Danzinger Strasse 10) – A local institution full of vintage gems.

While shopping in Berlin is far from boring regardless of the exact location, it gets even better in Prenzlauer Berg. Exit the shopping malls – here, the journey is reminiscent of times where high street megacentres didn’t exist, and shop owners were proud, dedicated, passionate people, truly happy to meet, greet and help their clients find exactly what they needed.

And in East Berlin, you can still find just that – an authentic shopping experience, that’s friendly for both your budget and your conscience. And who knows, you may just make a new friend along the way!
