Barcelona at night - scary or exciting?

First off - let me reassure you.

  • It’s not scary.
  • The Spanish devil does NOT come out after nightfall.
  • You don’t need to hold on to your handbag like it holds the actual date of the end of the world. Or WikiLeaks files.

In fact, Barcelona at night is quite lovely.

Mind you, I say that now, but as a solo female traveler, I had more than my share of moments. But after a few days, I started to relax, and I realized that even though Barcelona is notorious for pick pocketing and robbery - I should not spend my whole vacation in fear.

It doesn’t mean I started acting recklessly. I just stopped being scared, and used my city wits.

I think what I would say to people who are scared to venture out at night is quite simple: just be smart. Don’t go in dark alleys even if it makes for a nice shortcut. Don’t let strangers too close to you. If a situation feels weird, it probably is - walk away. Be. Smart.

And if you ever needed a few good reasons to see Barcelona at night, I think I have a few photos that may just help you overcome your fear.

Hindsight is 20/20, they say. And now that I look back on that day, trying to hide my money in secret compartments of my handbag, and even going as far as wearing my DSLR camera around my neck, I feel a bit stupid. I’m a city girl. I LOVE cities. Why would Barcelona be any different?

So - what do you say? Scary, or exciting?

Disclaimer: I was a guest of EasyJet Holidays on this trip. As always, all opinions are my own.

Have you been to Barcelona at night? Did you ever feel frightened, in danger? Or did you feel exhilarated by the energy?

BCN is an awesome city, anytime, it’s more like keep common sense in mind. I found you’re more likely to be pick pocketed than anything else, but that also could happen anywhere.

    Great pics by the way.

I have heard many tales of theft in Barcelona, but like you I didn’t have any problems. The Sagrada Familia looks even better by night. It does pay to read up about all of the Barcelona scams though. Just Google it.

I think if you are city smart, there won’t be any problems. If something seems or feels weird, just walk away!

Lovely! I am hoping to go next year for the first time. I just read a book about Gaudi’s La Pedrera and it is now on my bucket list.

I think La Pedrera isn’t the most interesting one - Casa Milo is much better, IMO!

I loved Barcelona at night - and felt great energy and never any threats.

Agreed-it’s exciting! I’ve had many nights of wandering around (once barefoot…) all night in Barcelona, and never felt scared :]

Lovely night photos. I like Barcelona (especially the food), but wouldn’t feel safe at night without some friends by my side. After getting pick-pocketed there, I’m still a little nervous.

Glad your experience was a nice one!
