Challenging My Willpower at the Chocolate Festival of Clermont-Ferrand

Posted on 09. Nov, 2011 by in Destinations, Europe Travel, France

While Clermont-Ferrand is usually not very high on any traveler’s bucket list (unless you’re an avid trekker), living in the city is far from boring. There is always something going on, whether it’s the famous Short Film Festival or the Jazz en Tête festival. But the event that definitely got my attention a while ago is the Chocolate Festival of Clermont-Ferrand. How was I supposed to resist? I would’ve gone even if it was just about the free tastings!

Yummy Chocolate Festival of Clermont-Ferrand

It was truly a chocolate overload. Macarons, marshmallows, syrup, spreads, nougat, cakes, bars, pieces. Dear God. It was so hard to resist! I literally was  a little kid in a candy store. Even though I live right above a chocolatier, seeing all the best products and artisans in the region gathered under one roof was really overwhelming. Alleys and alleys of chocolate for the pleasure of my eyes and my tastebuds!

Events-wise, there was not only a fashion show but also a little chocolatier atelier, which I thought was really cute. There isn’t anything quite rewarding and fun as a kid than making something with your own hands and eat it afterwards!

At one point, my chocolatier neighbor even recognized me as I walked past his stall, and waved. Although I understand he’s extremely happy with my business, I am starting to wonder if I should read something into this wave. Should I reconsider my diet? Hum. But on the other hand… what’s the point of living in France if I can’t indulge on one of its best expertise? When in Rome…! Diet can wait until I get back to Montreal (we do have other foods than poutine).

Although it was an extremely hard decision, I finally decided to get marshmallows, milk chocolate and banana bar and a piece of white chocolate crisped rice. I would’ve taken a photo… but I’m afraid there’s not much left of anything.

Have you even been to the Chocolate Festival of Clermont-Ferrand, or any other? What do you like about food festivals?

  1. I have been to a ton of different food festivals, but somehow never a chocolate one and that looks like the BEST kind! I’m sure I would come home with a stomach ache ;)

Oh, it IS the best kind, no doubt about that :-) The thing is that most stalls only give you small portions for free tasting, so there’s no need to worry about the stomach ache. Although it depends on what you take home and how much time to need to eat all of it!

  4. I’m a huge fan of festivals (of all persuasions!), but chocolate would seriously do me in. Twenty minutes and I’d probably be in a sugar coma. :P
