Discovering London with the Thames Clippers

Posted on 08. Jul, 2011 by in Destinations, Europe Travel, Press Trips, United Kingdom

Tired of walking but still thirsty for more London discoveries? The London Thames Clippers might just have the perfect solution for you!

When TakeTwo Books kindly offered me one of their books, I was ecstatic to find out I could use one of their offers to ride the famous clippers. I’ve always wanted to but somehow never managed to do it - now was the perfect timing. I shared the 2-for-1 deal with a friend and it only cost us £6.30 each instead of £12.60. What a great deal!

The London Thames Clippers is not just a regular tourist river boat - it’s actually part of the Transport for London network and it is used by Londoners who commute to work every day. You can even use your Oyster Card to pay for your ride! It is fully equipped with TVs, WiFi, restrooms, a small restaurant, and, most importantly, an outdoor deck at the back. That’s where we decided to sit, so we could take advantage of the glorious weather and the even better views.

How does it work? It’s actually pretty easy. You simply choose your boarding point, buy your “River Roamer” ticket on board, sit back and enjoy the ride!

The London Thames Clippers Route

One of the reasons why the London Thames Clippers is so great is that it’s very frequent, fast and reliable - even more so than the Underground (and certainly doesn’t make your itinerary more complicated with “planned engineering works”). The River Roamer ticket is a hop-on-hop-off, which means you can use the service as often as you want during the day for which you purchased your ticket. And with so many boarding points, it’s always within walking distance from London’s famous attractions, including both Tates, the Tower of London, Big Ben and the London Eye!

While Greenwich, for example, is really worth the detour, the distance from central London can easily scare off the tourists. With the London Thames Clippers, however, simply choose your boarding point and get to Greenwich in less than half an hour to enjoy an afternoon at the Royal Observatory or the historical Greenwich Palace. And the best part? The views! You get to see the beautiful Tower Bridge on a new angle, admire the financial district of Canary Wharf and the green gardens on your way to Greenwich. I don’t think commuting in London gets any better than that!

Check out the beautiful shots I got from my ride:

Looks tempting, eh?

I really recommend experiencing the London Thames Clippers if you have the cance, especially if you are blessed with a sunny day. You will not regret it!

This post was sponsored by TakeTwo Books, who were generous enough to give me one of their books so I could take advantage of the hundreds of offers in London. All opinions are my own though!
