Finding Banksy Art in London

Posted on 29. Jun, 2011 by in Destinations, Europe Travel, United Kingdom

Finding Banksy art in London is like trying to find a needle in a haystack - everyone knows it’s there, but very few people can actually point to it.

Even though Banksy is certainly one of the most famous character of modern art, he definitely fancies the mystery around his work - meaning that despite his popularity, no one knows where he is going to leave his mark next, and what controversial message it’s going to be about. While much of his art has been either destroyed or painted over (or even auctioned!), there are still some of them remaining in the Greater London, which are available for the pleasure of your eyes.

The map below displays all of the Banksy art in London, their exact location and actual state.

  • Blue pins are for still existing pieces.
  • Red crosses are still visible but not in their original state.
  • Red exclamation points are sadly gone.

I personally never had the chance to see Banksy art, except on the generic t-shirts in Camden Market. Sadly, my favorite works are either destroyed or severely damaged, but I’m sure he is going to come up with more brilliant work and, most importantly, that I will actually be able to see it with my own eyes. Googles Images can only do so much!

Have you seen any of Banksy art in London? Do you have a favorite piece? What is the most interesting street art you’ve seen in Europe or around the world?

I’m going to keep this in mind next time I’m in London (probably august)… I was thinking about moving to Camden Town or Islington… I see there’s still some work left! Definitely will check :)

There’s some Bansky art in Liverpool - including a large rat with a machine gun along Seel Street. I’m always on the look out for graffiti art and it’s amazing what you can find if you actually have your eyes open to it. I like how there’s a project in Bristol where artists have been allowed to decorate drab-looking buildings to brighten up certain areas. It looks great, I think.

What a useful post! Soon there will probably be an industry of Banksy tours, if there aren’t already!

  5. We were just in Berlin, where I actually learned about Banksy for the first time (I know, where have I been my whole life?). Funny that I might have seen some of his work in London and not even known it!

How interesting - I saw this art at a bar in Queenstown, New Zealand but didn’t know it was by a famous person…must have been a replica? Great to know the origin!

  8. We will definitely be checking these out on our next trip to London. I just saw a brilliant one on Reddit – George push pulling off a mask of President Obama. So much commentary in one image.
