Food Odyssey in La Rochelle

Earlier this year, I hopped on the car for my first trip away from my new European base. I had no idea what to expect from La Rochelle and I was definitely pleasantly surprised, especially my palate. Because the food in La Rochelle… oh my. I was not prepared for that!
It all started after a visit at the Tourist Office, which recommended us a little place nearby. We ended up having a lengthy, relaxing lunch by the port on rue du Quai du Gabut. At that point I was so hungry I would’ve settled for the golden arch, but soon enough, we were seated on a breezy pier overlooking the port. The special of the day was the salmon tartare, and I figured, when in Rome… If you’re not going to eat fish and seafood by the sea, when are you? And God, was it a good choice. I mean, look at this!
Lunch was definitely a smashing success and a nice preview for the next days, even though my friend found a few surprises in his mussels…
The next day, we ventured out to close by, idyllic Ile-de-Ré, in order to expand our odyssey for food in La Rochelle. Not only did we completely fall in love with the island, I also had the best steak fries of my entire life, hands down. It was huge, it was not good for my arteries, but it was so, so good.
And to top everything… ice cream. What could possibly be better during a foodie weekend than ice cream? And in the village of Saint-Martin, on Ile-de-Ré, they know how to charm the tourists with the ice cream. Rainbow-like array of flavors to be enjoyed by the sea? Yes please.
I was definitely not expecting such an amazing foodie experience when I planned my trip. But La Rochelle’s knew the way to my stomach heart and my poignées d’amour definitely keep a great souvenir of this weekend.
Have you been on a foodie tour before? Are you a fan of food in La Rochelle? Do you travel just for the food, sometimes?
