A Daytrip at the Keukenhof Gardens

Posted on 26. Feb, 2010 by in Destinations, Europe Travel, Netherlands

You know spring is around the corner when your local market starts selling colorful stashes of tulips. There’s no mistaking that! And Holland is no exception - the tulip capital of the world, the Keukenhof Gardens,  are actually located an hour away from Amsterdam and makes for a perfect daytrip out of the city.

Keukenhof Gardens

The Keukenhof Gardens in numbers:

  • More than 7 million bulbs and 2500 trees,
  • of 1600 different varieties,
  • exclusively provided by 90 Royal Suppliers,
  • spread over 15,000 m2,
  • and visited through 15 kilometers of footpath.

Impressive, right? The displays are truly magical and really are works of art, even though each individual flower is worth a good look (especially if you happen to have a macro lens, which I strongly suggest you do). The garden is opened for the tulip season, which usually starts late March and ends late May - however the best time to visit is definitely mid-April, where you’ll be able to catch a glance of the world famous rainbow-like tulip fields on your way to the Gardens.

Fore a mere €21 per person, you can get an amazing day out in one of Mother Nature’s best spot (slightly helped by talented landscapers, mind you). Tickets include both the entrance fee to the Gardens and the transfer from Schiphol Airport through the Dutch countryside. Really, a daytrip from Amsterdam doesn’t get any better than that.

There’s no doubt in my mind that the Keukenhof Gardens are truly worth the detour, even if you don’t have a green thumb (I killed an aloe vera - that’s how far I am from the green thumb).

Have you been to the Keukenhof Gardens? Where’s your favorite flower exhibition in the world?
