Cheeky Barceloneta - In Photos

Posted on 08. Oct, 2012 by in Destinations, Europe Travel, Photo Posts, Press Trips, Spain

One of my favorite things about Barcelona, outside the great food and architecture, is the crazy amount of street art and original landmarks.

I mean, where else will you see a giant smiling crawfish?

This cheeky crustacean is located right before the Barceloneta, right by Barcelona’s marina. It wasn’t actually built for the entertainment of tourists or locals, but as part of a grand commercial scheme during the Olympic period. The area, called Moll de la Fusta, wasn’t very popular back then - it was plagued with crime and overall creepiness, despite its key location in the city. The Olympics were the perfect occasion to spruce up the district, open up new businesses and basically clean out all the dirt.

And also build a giant crawfish.

Since then, the area around the marina has been thriving, and has even become one of the main center for concerts and cultural events. Not bad!

Disclaimer: I was a guest of EasyJet Holidays on this trip. As always, all opinions are my own.

Have you met Barceloneta’s crawfish? Have you seen something similar in other cities?

we rented a flat in Barceloneta, right across the street from the main promenade. it was a great base from which to explore the city. one of our favorite vacations ever.
