My Scandinavian-Benelux-English Train Trip Starts… Now!

Posted on 01. Oct, 2012 by in Europe Travel

Yeah, that’s quite the blog post title, eh?

I’ve been preparing this trip for months - it’s the biggest trip I will have done, both in terms of distance, organization and blogging opportunities as well. It all started when Eurail.com contacted me this spring and said “Hey, we’d like you to try out one of our passes, you in?”

Uh, HELL YEAH. Not that I said that to them. But I was extremely enthusiastic.

Then I started thinking about all the places I could possibly go, how much it would cost, what things I could do there, and I realized that I didn’t need to look further. I already knew what I wanted. Scandinavia, baby! And while I’m there, why not indulge in my favorite season with stops in Amsterdam and Belgium? Oh, and there’s a travel convention in London too? Ah well, might as well go while I’m at it.

And that’s how I ended up with this pan-Scandinavian-Benelux-English itinerary. Please put your hands together for my very high-quality map I made with lots of love in MS Paint.

More specifically, I’ll be traveling to:

  • Norway: Bergen, Gudvangen fjord, Oslo
  • Sweden: Gothenburg, Stockholm, Uppsala, Helsingborg, Malmo
  • Denmark: Copenhagen, Roskilde, Odense
  • Netherlands: Amsterdam, Den Haag, Haarlem, Rotterdam, Kinderkijk
  • Belgium: Brussels, Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp
  • And then off to London for the World Travel Market conference

That’s 6 months of work coming to completion. 3 new counties. About 20 new cities. In 40 days. It’s ambitious, seemingly exhausting and absolutely terrifying at once. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that I am finally leaving, on my own, to accomplish this adventure I’ve been dreaming about for years.

But I couldn’t have done everything by myself - I had a bit of help. Scratch that . I had HUGE amounts of help, more specifically generous sponsors that were interested in hopping on this crazy journey with me.

I will not be able to write as often as usual during my trip, but do not fret - I have several blog posts scheduled that will wrap up my summer travels, including the French Riviera, Barcelona, Normandy and more.

However if you wish to follow my journey in real time, there are several ways to do just that! Internet is quite the amazing little thing, I tell you. You can:

That’s it folks - as you read this, I am nervously embarking on this journey that will exhaust me, amaze me, probably make me cry at some point, and make me wish I never had to leave too. But I can’t wait to report to you guys, and perhaps even inspire you to do the same!

Although perhaps on a slightly less crazy schedule.

See you guys soon!

The Canadian blood in me is used to the cold, so I don’t think it’ll be a problem :)

Wow, 20 ciites in 40 days, well it *IS* ambitious, but you already know that! I like the fact that you’ve gone for a northern Europe itinerary in a handful of countries, so while you’ll be on the move a lot there won’t be so much culture shock and Scandinavia in the latter part of the year is an interesting choice too, but hey, nothing Montreal hasnt already thrown at you I’m sure! Kudos all round and look forward to reading your progress! :)

Wow, amazing that you got an opportunity like that!
And I love your self fabricated map:D
Your itinerary sounds interesting. It’s a completely different route than I would have chosen, so maybe you’ll be able to warm me up for Scandinavia. There’s a pun right there.
