Sunday’s I Want To Go To There: Funen Island, Denmark

This week’s instalment of I Want To Go To There takes us to lesser known territories. I didn’t even know about this destination before I read about it in my Let’s Go Europe Guide, which mentions this island in the Essential Architecture section. After a little more research, I can understand why!

Egeskov Castle, Funen, Denmark

The island is most known for Egeskov Slot, said to be the best preserved Renaissance water castle in Europe. Rumour has it that it took an entire oak tree forest to build the foundation, hence the name. I let you guess what Egeskov translates to in English.

Luckily for visitors, pretty much the whole castle is open to the public, including the fairy-tale like gardens and its four hedge mazes - one of them is almost 400 years old. The castle is easily reachable from Odense, the island’s metropol.

Odense is most known for the cultural heritage left by Hans Christian Andersen, the author of The Little Mermaid. There are many signs of that era in the local architecture, especially in Funen Village, which is an open air museum featuring 25 original 18th century houses, a pretty wooden windmill and last but not least, employees in traditional costumes.

Odense, Funen, Denmark

While Odense does make a pretty good setting for fairy-tales, it’s also imprinted with the famous and über-modern Danish architecture - the Storebaeltsbroen Bridge being the finest example.

Funen being an island, I guess it’s needless to mention how important an excursion to the seaside is (wait, did I just mention it?).

Oh, and the greatest way to explore the island? By bike. You shouldn’t have a problem finding one - there are supposedly more bikes than people in Denmark. Enjoy your ride!
