Top 25 Liveable Cities according to Monocle Magazine

Monocle Magazine published in their latest issue their very own Top 25 cities to live in. Unsurprisingly, most of them are located in Europe - the actual surprise is the winner of that survey: Munich, closely followed by Copenhagen and Zurich. Two of the biggest cities in the world, New York and London, shine by their absence of the list, for reasons named below.

The survey is based on several important factors, including crime rate, accommodation offer and prices, medical care and air quality (no wonder London and NYC are not in the list, then).

Here’s a short excerpt of the article:

“In the end the cities that make the cut are not just OK, but places that are benchmarks for urban renaissance and rigorous reinvention in everything from environmental policy to transport.”

But, as the chief editor explained, this top list (like any other top list for that matter), can only do so much with scientific answers: 50% of the result is purely based on pure subjectivity (i.e. the impressions of the person paid to visit these places). Although this report is not rocket science, it’s a fun way to start daydreaming about living in Europe - in places that actually are possible.

With that in mind, my version of that Top 25 would be slightly different (Paris in seventh place? I beg to differ. And how exactly is Barcelona a clean and green city ?). Although I am biased by my unconditional love for the city, London would certainly be somewhere among the top, although the accommodation costs kind of repulse me. I would probably choose Edinburgh (and travel to London on a very, very regular basis, thanks to cheap National Express). I would also consider Amsterdam.

Do you agree with this list? If not, what would you change? What are your criterias to consider a city liveable? Any thoughts?

Oh Montreal is in the list! Yay!

I agree with you, I would also have considered Amsterdam, especially for the tram and bicycles.

It kind of makes me feel bad to see Montreal in the list… since I live here and complain regularly on how I want to live elsewhere! Silly me, I guess.
