I Love London, a Photo Essay
Posted on 27. Jan, 2012 by Marie in Destinations, Europe Travel, Photo Posts, United Kingdom
To say that I love London is a slight understatement, and definitely not a secret. Throughout the last 4 years, I lived in the city for 10 months and visited 4 times, and took a massive amount of pictures of everything I liked about the city. The incoherent architecture. The quirky shops. The green spaces. The cosy coffee shops. The diversity of accents. And boy, the food.
In honor of all these wonderful things and my love for London, I created a photo essay that I hope represents it well. A fast-forward eclectic mix of everything, if you will!
That’s the first picture I took of London, ever. My photography skills have developed since then, but I still get goosebumps whenever I look at this one. I had just gotten in London in the morning and slept through the day, completely exhausted (moving everything you own to another country will do that to you). I woke up an hour or two before dusk and ventured out on my own, right in time for this magical sunset.
London is definitely a city of icons and landmarks known worldwide, most of the time filled with giddy tourists in white running shoes. Despite that, I still find myself impressed by these places (giggle-free) – it’s like a reality check every time, a reminder of how privileged I am to see all this.
I used the famous TKTS booth to go see Chicago in 2009, and I absolutely loved it. It was the first time I saw that musical and I would go again in a heartbeat!
London is definitely a city with a big history. No matter where you go, you can step back 100, 200 and even 500 years back. Westminster Abbey is a great example of that, with cloisters that date back to the 1400s. 13th century meets…
… 21st century! Nice contrast, eh? That’s London for you. Architecture of all possible kinds, creating a unique, eclectic blend.
No photo essay of London would be complete without a hint at its many, many green spaces. Did you know that 1/3 of London is actually a park?
No matter where you look around you, there’s always something to catch your eye.
So this is my London. I think a little part of my heart will always remain there, no matter where is physically is! And if you love the city as much as I do, why not book one of these holiday apartments London?
Are you a fan of London? What are your favorite photos of London? What’s your favorite thing to do, or place to go? Do you have good memories in the city?

[...] reasons, I think I might love with Paris. But don’t get me wrong here – I still love London more. But the prospect of being in Paris doesn’t sound so irritating anymore. Between you [...]

I lived in London for a couple of years – one of the few cities I’ve lived in where two years still wasn’t quite enough
Nice memories from your photos!

You know what they say… “Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” — Samuel Johnson

Your photography skills have indeed improved. Love all the little random candid shots. There is so much diversity in such a big town. My favorite of all of them is the Brick Lane sign.
What is the thing under it? Just a design or another language?

I believe it’s Brick Lane in Hindi? That would make sense, although I am not totally sure.

Having left London after two years of living there just last year these picture series really makes me miss it! Are the coloured window frames from Camden? Couldn’t quite work that one out…

The window frames are from Neal’s Yard, near Covent Garden. One of my favourite secret hangouts!

Lovely post, really! Makes me feel very excited about living in the city… and certainly reminds me of how special it is. I can’t get enough of its architecture, too…

I need to give London a second chance I think. =) I didn’t dislike it per se, it just didn’t live up to all of my incredible expectations of it. That being said, my two evenings spent wandering around Brick Lane were epic! That neighborhood is one I could wander around for quite some time. Great photos too!

London is definitely a city you learn to discover. It might seem overwhelming at first but once you get used to it, there are so many great places to see & things to do! Brick Lane is definitely one of my favourites.

Brick lane is an awesome place in London. I had no idea that 1/3 was green space. Thats a really large amount when you think about it.

Hope you make it back again one day in your future adventures!

Some great pics of London! I love that you have included the first one you ever took. Chicago is one of my fave musicals too – would love to see it again. I had no idea that a third of London is parkland. Incredible!
