The Scandic Bergen City is a great option to look into if you’re planning on staying overnight in Bergen. Here’s why:

Scandic Bergen City: Location

The hotel is located just outside the hustle of the town center, but close enough that it’s not very long to get to. I actually really liked the area around the hotel, where I found tons of great little restaurants, cafés and quaint streets to wander in. It’s a bit of a stretch from the train station or the shuttle bus, so perhaps a short cab ride would be best.

Scandic Bergen City: The hotel

There are two buildings at the Scandic Bergen City - the new one, and, well, the old one. The new one is where the reception area is, and it’s very modern, lounge-like and welcoming sitting area. However, the building across the streets has seen better days since it was last decorated, somewhere around the early 80s from what I guessed. You can definitely tell the building is aged, from the hall to the corridors. One of the main things I didn’t like was the smell in the elevator - I have no idea what it was, but it smelled very strong, and very chemical.

So if you do book at this hotel, try and request a room in the modern building.

The hotel also offers free buffet breakfast, which was really great - you can choose from typical Scandinavian breakfasts with veggies and cold meats, or a hot buffet, cereals and fresh fruits. Everything was delicious!

Scandic Bergen City: The rooms

The rooms, even though I was assigned one in the older building, were great. Needless to say I was a bit apprehensive from seeing the dated hall, but the minute I opened the door to my room I let out a content sigh. It was very spacious, clean and tastefully decorated. The bed was so comfortable I didn’t want to get out in the morning! The free WiFi was great too, which is often a problem with hotels - but not at the Scandic Bergen City - I was able to get some work done in my room, which I really appreciated.

The verdict

This is a great hotel - as long as you’re booked into the more recent building. Easy to get to, spotless rooms and tons of things to do in the area - three criterias essential to a good review. And the Scandic Bergen City nailed it!
