Snowy London, a Photo Essay

Posted on 02. Jan, 2012 by in Destinations, Europe Travel, Photo Posts, United Kingdom

When I was in London, two years ago, something unusual happened.

The city shut down. People retreated to their warm, cozy living rooms. Public transportation stopped operating. Shops closed for a few days. Snow was slowly taking over London, paralyzing its core. And so I did just what any Canadian would do.

I took a walk in Hyde Park.

Hyde Park

Hard to believe this is central London, right?

Hyde Park filled with snow lovers

Hyde Park

Can you count the snowmen?

Snowy phone boxes - not a common sight!

Snow in London is not a great scenario for regular life. The city is not equipped for dealing with snow falls, no matter how big or small. So it shuts down completely (causing major economic disasters). Some people chose to catch up on their sleep. Others decided to embrace their inner child and build snowmen in the park. Me, I couldn’t help myself, as I went through the familiar routine of putting on my boots, my scarf, my mittens, my hat and my duvet coat. I smiled.

Have you ever experienced snow in London? How did you react?

I love this photo essay!! I especially like the shot of people strolling through the park with the snow covered trees and buildings in the background. The place looks magical! :D

I like the last photo of the phone booths, it’s brilliant :) I lived in London for two years and never saw it like this - amazing stuff!

I was really lucky to be one of the few Canadians in the city during a snowstorm. It felt magical!

I really lucked out in 2009 - it really doesn’t happen often!

  3. How strange that the city shuts down when it snows…. I guess London gets more rain than snow, but I would have thought the city would be more accustomed to it!

I would’ve thought so too. But then again, if they were so well equipped, I couldn’t have come up with these shots :-)

They really have no infrastructure at all when it comes to snow - being from Montreal, I’m used to going out and about even after a 30 cm snow fall!

London looks beautiful like that!! It’s one of those cities that always seems better in winter to me anyway!

Well London in the spring is quite a sight - imagine the tulips everywhere in public parks and magnolias in the tree-lined streets! But snowy London is such a rarity, I loved it!

Somehow snow in London doesn’t surprise me even though I know it is a pretty rare thing. I just kind of have Dickens-esque images in my head. Beautiful pictures.

It doesn’t snow that often, fortunately for Londoners and London’s infrastructures! But it’s always such a magic sight to behold.

Love the photo essay. Although I’m not a big fan of the cold (and thus snow), this does look appealing:)
Especially followed by a hot coco :-)
