My year in London was… more than I could have imagined. More than words could ever explain.

It was beyond amazing, and even though I had some down moments and regrets, my love for the city is still very much alive, and so are my souvenirs. It opened up a whole new world to me, a world of discovery, and it’s the very reason why this blog even exists.

There were a lot of firsts during this trip. The UK was the first foreign country I visited. You read that right - I moved to Europe before I even set foot anywhere else. Hell, I hadn’t even been on a plane before and there I was moving across the Atlantic! Here’s a list of the main events of my trip:

  • I got engaged in Hyde Park;
  • Said event was closely followed by a vicious squirrel bite (My thumb still remembers. Bad, bad squirrel);
  • Yes, you read that right. I was bitten by a squirrel on my engagement.
  • I travelled more than 4000 km on the rail network of Britain;
  • I’ve had 5 friends stay overnight in my tiny 20m² studio;
  • I lived with students who made art projects in the common kitchen oven at 4AM;
  • I flew out of London 6 times from 3 different airports;
  • I got three Dick Whittington t-shirts;
  • I experienced a snowstorm in central London (which pretty much means the whole city was shut down!)
  • I discovered apple cider, which resulted in an unknown but undoubtedly very high amount of pints;
  • I spent countless hours on the top floor of double deckers, observing the city;
  • I’ve been to 2 musicals, 1 ballet and 4 rock shows;
  • I snapped almost 5000 photos, the best of which you can find here;

Not bad, eh?

When I came back to Montreal, though, I felt heartbroken. As if my other half had left me without any explanation, too fast and too sudden, with no chance of reconciliation. I couldn’t look into the future and imagine my life without it. However the present quickly came around and I had no choice but to move on. Of course, every now and then I still have this urge to leave everything I have and go back, but I’m afraid that would spoil the wonderful memories I cherish. I want them to remain perfect for as long as I have the ability to remember, and I want stars to fill my eyes every time I mention my adventure. And as of today… they still do.

Is the love I have for London a poisoned gift? It most certainly is.

Would I exchange it? Never in a million years.

    I moved there sight unseen as well, by myself, when I was 21. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
