What The Hell is the United Kingdom?

Posted on 08. Feb, 2011 by in Destinations, Europe Travel, United Kingdom

Be honest. You know you’ve asked yourself that question too.

If you can manage to understand the fast-paced (and humorous) tone of the narrator, you probably now are an expert on the subject. Being a Britophile myself I already knew all this, but I agree it can be quite confusing for the non-initiated - even Brits are not always sure what’s Northern Ireland doing in the UK, or what Great-Britain really is.

(I got this little gem via Smitten by Britain).

Err, Northern Ireland isn’t in Britain…

There’s a reason that it’s known as “The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”

That’s what happens when you try to do things too quickly. Fixed it, thanks for mentioning it. Although I definitely look like I know nothing about the UK now. ;)

This was super helpful! I was actually a bit clueless about the differences-I’m no Britophile! Will be sharing for laughs with my English friends!

Even after living in England, I could NOT get all this information straight. My Brit (now I’m not even sure I can call them that) friends tried to explain it, but I swear they didn’t really know the answers either!

Far from being “United” the UK is falling apart. Mainly because the UK powers that be deny the existence of the largest component nation - England.

And adding injury to insult the English get the least (by far) per person, per year funding. And as a consequence have to pay £9k a year tuition fees (free in Scotland, subsidised in NI and Wales). Pay £7.40 per prescription item (Free to Welsh, Scots and NIrish). And get a raw deal on hospital parking, road and bridge tolls, care for the elderly, eye tests and dental check-ups etc.

Also because England is the only “UK” nation without a government working in its interests the UK parliament can only sell off English assets such as English forestry and ports etc.

Not a United Kingdom at all - a crumbling kingdom and the sooner it’s gone the better for the vast majority of “Brits” aka the English.
