Where to stay in Flam: Fretheim Hotel

Posted on 16. Oct, 2012 by in Europe Travel, Norway, Reviews

During my week in Norway, I had the chance to stay overnight in the teeny-tiny village of Flam, right in the heart of the fjords. While I was a bit skeptical about the quality of accommodation in such a remote place, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The Fretheim Hotel is, for lack of a better word, simply fantastic.

Flam

The location

Well… for a village like Flam, it’s hard to NOT be well-located. I mean, I could circle the entire place in 15 minutes. On my knees.  The hotel is directly across the train station, and the dock for those who, like me, arrived in Flam via boat. So location-wise, the hotel is perfect.

The hotel itself

I felt like entering the Walt Disney world of the woods. Immediately upon setting foot inside, you’re greeted with the smell of the fire burning in the lobby, and the warmth of the personnel.

The restaurant offers a limited but delicious selection of meals, both for lunch and for dinner. As a Canadian, few things are as comforting to me as a wood-fire burning, a hot soup and gorgeous mountain scenery! And that’s exactly what I indulged with during my stay at the Fretheim.

The only thing I didn’t like about the hotel is the fact that there’s no wifi in the rooms - only in the lobby and restaurant. Considering I used the downtime in Flam to get some work done, that was a bit irritating. But the lobby is so lovely anyway, I really don’t have much to complain about!

The rooms

The rooms were spacious, well decorated, had cable TV, a balcony, tea/coffee making facilities and, most importantly, a heated floor in the bathroom, which was particularly appreciated in the chilly Norwegian mornings. The bed was extremely comfortable too! I can’t find anything negative to say about the rooms, really.

My verdict

Well, there are only two hotels in Flam. And even though I haven’t experienced the other one, I had such a great time at the Fretheim that I wouldn’t consider staying elsewhere, or recommending otherwise. You are guaranteed a positive Nordic experience at the Fretheim and despite the remote location of the village, you won’t be disappointed to have spent a night there.

I loved the Fretheim!

This hotel looks great! My husband and I are heading to Iceland and Norway next spring, and we are making a stop in Flam. I originally wanted to stay in the Fretheim Hotel (and even more so now!), but it was completely booked. Turns out we are going right around the time of some event going on, so we only had two options, the Brekke Gard Hostel and the Heimly Pensjonat. We ended up reserving a room at Heimly Pensjonat-better than nothing I guess (or I hope)! Maybe we will have to have dinner at the Fretheim, or at least walk in to check it out!
