Where to stay in Paris: Hotel Le Five

Posted on 25. Apr, 2013 by in Destinations, Europe Travel, France, Reviews

Upon my most recent visit to Paris I was lucky enough to be invited by Hotel Le Five to experience one of their famous “scintillating canopy” rooms, I didn’t hesitate for long. My experience with the Elegancia Group had always been outstanding, and I couldn’t wait to find out if this hotel would top the others.

As it turns out, it sort of did.

Located just a short walk from Les Gobelins métro station and well-served by several bus routes, and it allowed me to discover a whole new arrondissement (the famous rue Mouffetard and its shops, the beautiful Place d’Italie, the Jardins du Luxembourg, etc). Less touristy Paris, more local? Yes please.

There are several yummy restaurants in the area, including a delicious Japanese bakery around the corner and a typically Parisian brasserie a few hundred meters east. It’s a bit out of the way of the main sights, but in my opinion, it’s a welcome change from the hustle of the Rive Gauche and its incessant flow of tourists.

Hotel Le Five is small, cozy, intimate, and very welcoming. The service team, impeccable by Parisian standards, tends to your every need and ensures that you have an absolutely perfect stay.

As you can see from the photos, nothing about this hotel is generic. Style, taste and design are the true masters here, and it reflects in pretty much everything, from the lobby to the breakfast room to the dizzying staircases, and further on into the rooms. Speaking of which, the buffet breakfast was a bit on the small side but hey, I honestly can’t fault any breakfast that offers fresh, tasty macarons in the morning.

Bonus points at check-in: you get to choose which scent you wish to have in your room. A nice touch!

Hotel Le Five Paris: The Rooms

I was assigned the Canopy room on the 4th floor, which is a comfortable-albeit-a-tiny-bit-small room for two. The room is fully equipped with ensuite bathroom, iPod dock, LCD screen and satellite television, double-glazed windows, optical fiber shower, l’Occitane en Provence toiletries and a lot more.

The best part of the room? The actual “canopy”. The bed is enveloped by red strings and a twinkling lights on the ceiling and headboard, creating the impression of sleeping under a starlit sky. While I’m wasn’t convinced at the description at first, the actual feeling of watching the tiny lights before going to sleep is actually a lot of fun.

What kept me from having sweet dreams, however, is the noise. Unfortunately, the rooms aren’t very soundproof, at least between the rooms. I couldn’t hear a sound coming from the outside, but on the other hand, I could hear every single word of the telephone conversation of my neighbor, and I could hear him walking around until the wee hours of the morning.

This was the only shadow on what appeared to be a perfect stay, but sadly, a pretty big one.

I would definitely recommend staying at Hotel Le Five - but after asking for a soundproof room. Other than that, the hotel is absolutely flawless. Great location, beautiful and original rooms, and impeccable service certainly make for an enjoyable stay regardless of the other factors.

Disclaimer: I was a guest of Hotel Le Five Paris and Elegancia Hotels. As always, all opinions are my own.
