Where to stay in Rotterdam: Suite Hotel Pincoffs

Posted on 01. Nov, 2012 by in Destinations, Europe Travel, Netherlands, Reviews

During my recent stay in Rotterdam, I wasn’t very lucky when it came to my accommodation - three nights, three different places. Not exactly my idea of a relaxing weekend getaway.

But the minute I entered the Suite Hotel Pincoffs, all worries and frustrations were forgotten. Warm greetings, a fresh decor and a welcoming atmosphere were just what I needed, if only for one night.

The hotel

The hotel is located south of central Rotterdam, but is not isolated for such. It’s actually part of the old-but-recently-rejuvenated Kop Van Zuid area, which used to be a docking port. Now a vibrant, original neighborhood, it’s filled with shops, restaurants for all wallets, and beautiful vantage points on the port of Rotterdam and the famous Erasmus Bridge. Plus, it’s very easily reachable by a short metro ride from the city center. So location-wise, it’s the perfect excuse to get away from the partying center and explore a new neighborhood of Rotterdam.

Edwin and Karen opened this hotel in 2008, after years of traveling around the world, and compiling what they liked, and most importantly didn’t like, about hotels they stayed at. They opened the Suite Hotel Pincoffs wanting to offer a luxurious, but smart and welcoming experience to travelers. And I have to say - mission accomplished.

The Green Key

Sustainability is a state of mind

One of the things that interested me the most about this hotel is their efforts towards sustainability. The hotel has been awarded the Golden Green Key, the highest international ecolabel - but haven’t foregone luxury for so. Karen and Edwin have proven that it is possible to have a lavish hotel experience, but not at the expense of nature, of our planet.

A simple glance at the decor is enough to understand the whole idea of this hotel. Many pieces of furniture or fabric have been given a second life - under-carpets are now cushions, old doors that don’t meet modern standards are now tables, and old tires are now funky-looking benches. The result is, however, so tastefully done that one could never argue on the quality and style of these unique, green creations, and pretend that they don’t belong to a 4-star establishment.

Additionally, the hotel only uses fair trade and/or organic foods,  is 100% powered by green energy, actively separates waste and has a forest in Panama. For them, there is no other way than the green way, and they take their ecological duties at heart.

My XL suite

The suites

The hotel chose to offer quality and size instead of quantity, and this definitely shows in the atmosphere of the rooms - or shall I say, suites. Some of the rooms in this hotel are larger than my apartment!

I was assigned an XL suite, which was one of the loveliest rooms I have ever stayed in. It was fully equipped with an espresso machine, LCD tv and DVD player, an iPod dock, Bvlgari bathroom products and fluffy bathrobes, a comfortable bed and a beautiful antique cabinet. Small touches that are much appreciated by the modern traveler.

The modern bathroom

Here’s how I spent my time at the Suite Hotel Pincoffs: I chatted with the owner, Edwin, at the cozy bar downstairs, I ate a delicious veggie lasagna at the nearby Italian eatery, I indulged with a warm bath and fancy oils, and I watched a movie about Coco Chanel, that I got from the DVD collection, all while sipping on fairtrade tea, looking at the striking Erasmus Bridge through my window, and tweeting about it all thanks to the free WiFi.

Exactly the kind of relaxing evening I needed.

My verdict

In case it wasn’t clear enough already, I loved my stay at the Suite Hotel Pincoffs. And I challenge anyone who stayed there to find something negative to say about it. Everything, from the warm welcome, to the luxurious rooms to the no-nonsense approach to green hotel management, speaks heaps about the kind of hotel this.

The view from my suite

My only regret is that I couldn’t stay longer than just one night! Suite Hotel Pincoffs is definitely the kind of hotel you go back to, again and again, because they offer an unforgettable experience, and will elevate your traveling standards.

Disclaimer: my stay at the Suite Hotel Pincoffs was complimentary. As always, all opinions are my own.
