Enchanted by Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens

“Enchanted” is quite the understatement of the year, in this case.

For a North American, Halloween is a big thing. Think decorations all over town, eerie music playing, dressed up kids as well as grown-ups everywhere in sight. Not unlike Christmas, if you do Halloween, you either go big or go home.

But in Europe, Halloween is about just as trivial as the Japanese soccer league results or the election result in Manitoba. I’ve had to get used to this culture while living in France, and accept the fact that a dressed-up Halloween party just isn’t happening on this side of the pond.

Cue Tivoli Gardens, in Copenhagen. Just one of the many, many things to do in this gorgeous city!

Quite magical indeed.

Everywhere I looked I saw the Halloween magic do its thing on the locals, secretly crossing my fingers that this would perhaps be the start of the Euro-Halloween. I’ll have to wait until next year to see if the news have spread to France!

It’s actually a bit weird to hang out in an amusement park at night.

All you can hear is “shwoooooshhhAAAAAAAHHHHHswoooosssshAAAAAAAAAAAAAH”, but you can’t see the actual rides. You hear it moving, you hear people scream, but you have no idea where they are physically. Definitely a challenge for the senses, I tell you!

What I also noticed is that the Tivoli Gardens are not your average, McDonalds-riddled amusement park. There are beer gardens, fancy bistros and artisan shops scattered around, which all make for a great evening out and about in beautiful Copenhagen.

With or without a witch costume.

Disclaimer: I was a guest of Eurail.com and Visit Denmark. As always, all opinions and kickass photos of Tivoli are my own.

Have you been to the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen? What season was it? Do you prefer to go during the day or at night?

Tivoli is a must-do for every visitor to Copenhagen, with or without children. At Christmas it is even more wonderful, and this year has a Russian theme. In the summer go in the evening for the magical light show and less crowds. There’s live music there too and some superb beer…
